It was just after 9 pm on a Saturday and even though we were assured a rainless evening, it hadn't given up on pouring! Mark and I were relaxing going over the weekend's tennis rankings, at the ready for the seventh fuel drain of the day to arrive. Eventually we got a phone call from a lovely women on a company excursion who had gone to the Tesco filling garage in Nabs Head and filled petrol in a diesel brother's Isuzu i-350 rental in error. She was very affected it seemed, saying "I can't believe I have wrecked the vehicle! I am just so used to putting unleaded in my petrol vehicle that I totally did not remember I was running a diesel!" We told her to calm down and not to be concerned, and that these things unfortunately can happen. She was able to maneuver the car to a secure position and, seeing as it was no more than a few miles off from the office, we were able to find the lady fairly quickly. The incorrect fuel was drained and she was able to go home to the hotel she was staying in. Despite the fact we got pretty drenched, it was all worthwhile to see her drive home satisfied and much less concerned. One more misfuel correction in Lancashire done well in my opinion!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about petrol in diesel!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, regardless of whether it is unleaded or diesel, can be an important matter to deal with in an automobile - particularly in more modern common-rail engines.

Putting water or AdBlue inside your fuel tank is going to lead to idling issues, lumpy running, abnormal smoke and, if it is not remedied fully, potentially damaged injectors. Having water in petrol is less complicated to get rid of as compared to water in diesel - mainly because diesel is an oil. However we are able to resolve both cases pretty swiftly.

Take note that in the event that the vehicle has been started on the water contamination it will probably need a new fuel filter fitted because the old one will likely be totally wet and unusable.

Waste Fuel Removal

Got an old fuel tank placed at the rear of the garden containing unwanted, unusable or contaminated fuel? We're able to help you to get rid of it. We have been called out to quite a few private and business premises in Lancashire for the purpose of draining and recycling fuel storages. We are licenced by the Environment Agency to be able to remove and dispose of waste fuel safely and legally.

Irrespective of whether the fuel storage is a subterranean reservoir, a portable bowser, or perhaps even a number of containers in a shed, if we can reach it, we can drain it for you.

Wrong Fuel Assist Nabs Head - Wrong Fuel in Car Nabs Head

I'd had a fantastic day golfing during the weekend and felt pleased the next working day as I headed out to aid a young family who were away in Nabs Head. They had broken down after filling petrol into their metallic blue BMW 325, and the car was about an hour's travel away. I got there at their position and laughed as I listened to the girl telling her partner off for actually being so silly. "Just how could you possibly manage to fill up by using the wrong fuel?" she told him. I attempted to clarify that this kind of thing occurs on daily basis in Lancashire and that it is nothing to worry about, nonetheless he still got an earful by his better half. Unfortunate lad. At any rate, I drained all of the wrong fuel, flushed the motor and filled it up with the appropriate fuel. While watching them drive off I shouted so long and pondered on what my wife would say to me if perhaps I made the very same blunder... I'd never ever hear the end of it!

Wrong Fuel in Car Lancashire - Petrol in Diesel Car Nabs Head

I'm certainly not overly keen on running on weekends, and 2 weeks ago was the same. I'd only just left the family filled with a fantastic roast prepared for me by the missus, and I was on my way to deal with a man after he filled the incorrect petrol in his mint green Jeep Compass. He was located in Nabs Head hence I was there rapidly. Just as I arrived right behind the car and got busy draining he said to me "Thank the Lord! I foolishly had my mind on other stuff and failed to ascertain I'd put the wrong fuel in my petrol car. Is it possible I brought about any problems by running it?" I stated that truth be told there should not be any harm and that I'd drain the contaminated fuel as soon as possible for him. Obviously I got the contaminated fuel drained from the vehicle and filled it with the appropriate fuel, and thus another satisfied customer was able to continue on his ride with no bother. The man couldn't stop saying thanks to me, and that is exactly what makes working on Sundays in Lancashire a little better to me!

This was what is called an unsociable hour to be awake. It was roughly dawn and almost noone was around. It had become quite uneventful so far, and Paul and I were loafing about reading a number of old articles. That was a rare quiet moment in Lancashire. Actually it was in fact so quiet that when the telephone finally rang it made me jump! The customer on the other end told me: "I've just finished my night shift and incredibly put the wrong fuel in my diesel stylish Ford Transit Connect by mistake". I told him to let us know where exactly the car was and we hit the road, ending up in Nabs Head less than an hour later. The contaminated fuel was removed from the motor and he said thanks a lot for showing up so promptly. While we were going back home we found two young women at the side of the highway who seemed like they had a flat tyre. So we pulled over to change it, much to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
